Great Ponton pupils look cool in the sun

Youngsters at Great Ponton Primary School have been learning about the dangers of the sun and how to protect themselves as part of a national campaign.

Headteacher Jon Clack said: The message is to wear the correct clothes, sun hats, sunglasses and sun cream and encourage children to be safe in the sun by making use of shade and plenty of water. This launch was supported by the Youth Sport Trust and our local sports charity Inspire+.

Tottenham Hotspur - Blowing the Whistle on Sunburn

The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code is a sun protection initiative designed for outdoor activity leaders.

The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code was devised by ‘Get to know cancer’s charity partner, the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund.

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 16) , for our last home game of the season against Hull City, volunteers from the charity will join the ‘Get to know cancer’ nurses and activists at the ‘Get to know cancer’ market stall on Tottenham Square, where fans can get information on the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and advice on how to protect themselves and their children from the sun.

Adderley Primary School Accredited Supporter

Adderley Primary School is now an accredited supporter of the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, a fantastic nationwide sun awareness and protection initiative.

Devised by the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code (OKSSC) is partnered with the Youth Sport Trust, the Association for Physical Education (AfPE), the Child Protection in Sport Unit and sports coach UK. Following its launch in 2014, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code has increased its support to over 80 national governing bodies and outdoor activity groups.

Blow the whistle on sunburn this summer

The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code is a sun protection initiative designed for outdoor activity leaders.

The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code was created by the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund and is the only free accredited sun protection initiative for all those who work outdoors with children. Partnered with the Youth Sport Trust, Association for Physical Education (AfPE), Child Protection in Sport Unit and Sports Coach UK, it is now supported by over 80 national governing bodies of sport (NGBs), county sports partnerships and a wide variety of outdoor and coaching organisations.

Among other organisations, London Sport have also pledged our support for the initiative. Gary Palmer, the Strategic Lead for Children and Young People at London Sport said: “Our mission is to help inspire more people to be physically active. Londoners of all ages, including young people, often take part in sport and physical activity outdoors. Being aware of sun safety is key to ensuring the care and well-being of young people participating outdoors. That’s why we have pledged our support to the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code and will promote and advocate the campaign through our networks across the capital.”

On one hand, we are informed that children need exposure to sunlight so that their bodies’ stores of essential vitamin D are boosted. On the other, we are warned that too much sun raises the risk of skin cancer.

Futureactive are delighted to be support The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code initiative, “the first free accredited sun protection initiative designed specifically for outdoor activity leaders”.We will be actively promoting the free accreditation scheme to all our Activity Leaders, PE and sport supply staff, job hunters and to the schools and children’s activity providers that we work with.

This spring the Myfawy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund have launched a new and improved format which aims to help ‘Blow the Whistle on Sunburn!’ The initiative provides a wealth of resources and an accreditation scheme for Activity Leaders, Sports Coaches, PE Teachers and people working outside with young people which aims to encourage best practice and the promotion of sun safety for both adults and the children in their care.

Leading by example to keep kids safe from the sun

It seems like the younger generation is lost in a world of technology and getting them away from screens can be a battle. However getting kids playing outdoors in the sunshine is vital to the development of everyday life skills and their overall health and wellbeing.

With the pressure of getting them out there playing for a day in an organised activity, unfortunately many forget the importance of protecting them from the sun. Although good for us in small doses, the danger comes from unprotected, prolonged exposure to the sun and the incidence of sunburn.
