OK Sun Safety Code

The Meek Family say OK to the role of melanoma warriors

The Meek Family’s latest adventure ties up very well with their healthy, outdoor lifestyle. DCD Publishing is delighted to announce that Tim, Kerry, Amy and Ella have become ambassadors for the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, the only initiative of its kind that supports all those who work outdoors with children.

Devised by the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund in 2014 to highlight the dangers of exposure to the sun, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code is a unique sun protection scheme created to tackle the steady rise of melanoma rates in the UK by raising awareness of the danger of sunburn.

Blowing the Whistle on Sunburn!

In the UK, 37 people are diagnosed with melanoma each day. With 86% of melanomas attributed to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, avoiding sunburn when young can reduce the chances of developing melanoma by as much as 78%.

The Meeks have joined a prestigious line-up of ambassadors including TV presenter Julia Bradbury, Matthew Hoggard MBE, Women’s World Cup Semi-finalist Casey Stoney MBE, and Alan Titchmarsh MBE, as well as over 90 National Governing Bodies of sport, coaching and outdoor organisations.

As the first family invited to take on the ambassadorship, Amy (11) and Ella (9) Meek offer an exciting opportunity to reach out to a younger audience and educate their peers about the importance of sun safety and the harmful effects of UV exposure.

Meek Family Adventures

The family’s motto, ‘adventure is out there, you just have to go and find it’ has taken them the length and breadth of the country as they travel around the UK in a caravan in search of rich and engaging learning, taking up challenges such as 100 Family Adventures, 50 Thrifty ‘Eat Outs’ and 500 Fresh Air Miles. The latest lesson for Tim, Kerry and their two daughters is exploring the meaning of ‘ambassadorship’ and learning about melanoma and its causes.

Speaking of their new role, Ella said “I feel really proud to be an ambassador. I think it’s important that children understand the importance of protecting themselves in the sun; after all, it is our responsibility to take care of our skin as much as it is our parents! I hope to spread the word about the dangers of sunburn to everyone.” For further information visit www.oksunsafetycode.com
