What is the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code?

A free downloadable resource bank and accreditation scheme. By getting OK accredited, individuals and organisations will be better equipped to protect children from the harmful effects of the sun while enjoying physical activity outdoors.

Why get involved?

Just a few incidences of sunburn in youth can double the lifetime risk of melanoma. Supporting this initiative and getting OK accredited will help you improve the provision on sun protection, build good habits and help cut the rising rates of melanoma in the UK.

How do I get Involved?

Simply register online, this will give you access to the OK Guidelines and free resources to help you develop a sun protection policy and ensure it is implemented throughout summer.

Is it right for my activity?

We have designed the initiative to support all activities and level of resources. We have made getting OK accredited as simple as possible so you can get up and running this summer.

Julia Bradbury Q&A

Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code

Julia Bradbury is an ambassador for the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, www.oksunsafetycode.com is a free on-line resource to help support all those who work outdoors with kids. We catch up with Julia to find out more about why she agreed to help blow the whistle on sunburn and why sun protection is so important to her and her family.

Q: Why did you decide to support the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code?

A: As the mother of a young son and a lover of the outdoors I know only too well the challenges of saying safe in the sun; when the charity invited me to become an ambassador for them last year I felt an immediate connection and jumped at the chance. The Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund realised that there wasn’t a standard approach to sun protection for children outdoors so they created and funded the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code themselves; as they are a small national charity they rely solely on donations, so to launch such a far reaching campaign is amazing and they deserve all the support I – and everyone else, can give.

Q: Tell us a bit about the initiative?

A: This is the first initiative to support those who work outdoors with kids. The initiative consists of a FREE online resource bank and can be found at www.oksunsafetycode.com. It was developed by a leading skin cancer specialist alongside experts in physical education and safeguarding, and is endorsed by national governing bodies, clubs and associations who work with children in a whole range of outdoor activities. Parents should start to see the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code logo from this Summer on, and if their child attends a club or group they should be asking to see that the organisation is committed to following the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code.
